Typical German foods that should be on your list

When it comes to typical German foods, the chances are almost zero that you’ve never heard of at least one of them. Like any destination in the world, Germany has a few ingredients that form the basis of its gastronomy.

Typical German foods: eisbein, pork knee with sauerkraut

This is the traditional pork knee with sauerkraut, one of Germany’s most popular dishes. This typical German food is usually served roasted, with a crispy rind, and accompanied by sauerkraut or potatoes. Although this is the most popular form, it can also be found in a boiled version.

Sauerkraut, one of Germany’s traditional dishes

The famous sauerkraut is Germany’s well-known cabbage-based dish, another of Germany’s typical foods. It’s made with pickled, fermented cabbage and the German version is more sour than the sauerkraut found in Brazil.

Typical German food: leberkäse is usually served crowned with a fried egg

The dish, quite common in Bavaria, is a kind of meatloaf baked and served in slices (as if it were a loaf of bread), which contains beef and pork, bacon and onions. Some of the most common ways to serve it are with bread and/or a fried egg on top, and accompanied by potatoes, either fried or a salad. You can also make a sandwich with ham, cheese and egg. Mustard makes it even tastier!

Typical German food: the famous knotted bread

The famous pretzel is a knot-shaped bread much loved by Germans and one of the typical foods of Germany. The traditional way to serve it is sprinkled with coarse salt and accompanied by beer and white sausage, but it can also be topped with cheese or pumpkin seeds. Another way to serve the pretzel is cut in half and filled with butter and chives. There is also the sweet pretzel.

Typical German food: Schnitzel

With Austrian origins, schnitzel made it onto our list because it is so common in the country, as if it were typical German food. It is a veal steak that is pounded to make it thinner and fried in a similar way to what we know as a breaded steak. It’s delicious!
